Cantors are singers who are able to ENCOURAGE the congregation to sing and worship. They are the song leaders during the Mass. Cantors or psalmists sing from the front of church and encouage by congregation by facial expression, vocal quality, and gestures. Cantors also announce the songs titles and numbers, and they sometimes teach the new songs to the congregation. Cantors and psalmists are expected to memorize refrains and key phrases so there is eye contact with the people throughout the songs. And, while worship is a serious thing, cantors and psalmists should not be overly serious...they should smile and be happy to praise God with His people! Cantors and psalmists are not soloists; soloists are those who have exceptional voices either in folk, contemporary, or classical music and sing during preludes, offertories, or during communion. But like cantors, the text of the soloist's song normally is related to the scriptures within the liturgy or is based on the communion rite. . |
