| MINUTES of Liturgy Committee Meeting, January 21, 2010 The Christmas environment (decorations) was praised. Various items were finalized for Lent and Easter. The recent Diocesan letter regarding upcoming Holy Days, special days, training for readers, and a variety of other liturgical concerns was passed out. Very little or no items were not currently being done correctly at St. John. Dave has given the DVDs for church and school regarding the meaing of th Mass, prayer, etc. to Fr. Chris for his approval. The request was made to educate the parish about not chewing food or gum during Mass. This will be done in the "DID YOU KNOW....'" bulletin blurbs. Fr. Chris encouraged the choir to sing a congregational hymn for the Palm sunday procession instead of a choral anthem, to sing new arrangements for psalm settings for Easter Vigil, and to sing the original Gregorian chant by soloists for Pentecost Sequence. It was requested to sing the Dallas Holm's song "Rise Again" for Palm Sunday. It was requested that a schedule of prayer for Adoration after Holy Thursday Mass include longer silence before there is spoken prayer. A variety of other detailed issues, mostly relating to Lent & Holy Week, were also discussed. MINUTES of Liturgy Committee Meeting, Oct. 15, 2009 The environment was discussed for Advent. There will be no Gloria sung, but a new Alleluia will be sung for Advent. A chrismtas Cantata has been chosen. Altar decroations will be limited to one flower arrangment of fall colors. There will be no "harvest" arrangements during Advent. Advent colors are purple, not blue. Christmas decorations will be put up in one or two scheduled days with volunteers contacted . Other related details were discussed. A reminder that October 31 and November 1 will be celebrations for All Saint's Day. The 4th grade children will process in saint's costumes on a school Mass on Monday, Nov. 2, All Soul's Day. There is still a problem regarding student psalmists. People cannot hear them speak the verses to the psalm as well as the first reading. Steve (music director) cannot hear the difference from the choir loft, & had thought a few previous complaints had been about the singing of the refrain, not the verses. Verses will be improved. (The music for the refrain cannot be put in the pew due to copyright restrictions and budget restraints, and chant is not being used for the psalm refrains because the little children are still unable to sing diffenernt psalm chants at every Mass. They do much better with repeating melodic refrains from the Gather hymnal, which grades 1 -6 learn at the beginning of the year.) As requested, Dave Elchert looked into bringing a speaker to St. John to help educate the parish in the meaning of the Mass and other liturgical issues. This turns out to be very expensive ($1000 - 1500). However, the speaker's website states DVDs of the same speaker's teaching are only $12 apiece. The Commitee agreed these could be used at St. John in a variety of ways: youth group, school classrooms, PSR, Confirmation classes, RICA, etc. (Steve later checked with youth, RICA and PSR leaders, and they agreed they could use them.) Steve volunteered money from music/liturgy budget to purchase these DVDs and place them in a parish library or office for use. Dave also said audio CDs could be purchased at $1.25 apiece if purchased in bulk of 100. Steve volunteered money, suggesting these be sold fo $1.00 apiece at the door of the church. This would then arouse further interest among parishoners to see DVDs at a scheduled parish night. Dave suggested the CDs be given out for free; however Alice Wheeler (not at the meeting, but a member of the committee) later suggested the CDs be sold fo $1.00 so people would be more careful not to lose them and not take them for granted. In this way, only the serious people would purchase the CDs and they wouldn't be ignored and thrown away at home. Steve passed out a visual summery of documents of Vatican II; Dave said all documents could easily be found on the internet for research. Minutes provided by Steve Royal |
