Church Music & Copyrights
Presently, St. John  Parish owns CCLI licensing, which includes the legal right to photocopy the words and music of 7,000 songs for congregational singing only. We also have rights to record and provide "practice CDs" for musicians for a few congregational songs, provided those songs are covered under CCLI.  A yearly license with CCLI costs the church about $280.00.

WE DO NOT HAVE COPYRIGHT PERMISSION TO MAKE PHOTOCOPIES OR PRACTICE CDs  OF MUSIC  THAT IS NOT COVERED UNDER CCLI.  WE ASK THAT YOU DO NOT COPY MUSIC FROM RECORDING ARTISTS AND PUBLISHERS NOT COVERED UNDER CCLI.  We also ask that no photocopying or recording of music or lyrics occur without the express permission of the Director of Liturgy and Music. When such permission is obtained, all such music must contain the composer's name,  the publishing copyright information, and the number of our license number on the same page as the song.

CONCERNING PRACTICE TAPES AND CDs:
All practice CDs or tapes must have either a mechanical license or be covered by CCLI licensing before they are passed out..  In addition, the specific recording must be a Worship CD published by a CCLI company, such as Integrity or Vineyard Publications.  Some companies, such as Oregon Catholic Press, often do not allow practice CDs or tapes to be made, even if you play the instruments or sing on the recording yourself.   Also, recordings by Christian artists under certain labels, such as Jars of Clay or songs from WOW CDs are not coverered, even though the song may be covered when it is recorded by a different artist under a different publishing company. Each publisher has different rules. Please contact the website of CCLI, the publisher, or myself to ask about specific copyright regulations before copying or making an recordings of other artist's songs.  Finally, all practice CDs and tapes must be returned to the Director of Liturgy and Music or destroyed when rehearsals  are over. They CANNOT be kept for one's own personal use, neither can they be given away to friends or sold..

Copyright licensing from all companies only allows copies and practice CDs to be made for congregational singing.  It is never permissible to make copies for "special music" that the congregation only listens to (unless the congregation is learning how to sing that song.).  Examples of  "special music"  include choral anthems, soloist pieces and accompaniments, and instrumental pieces.

Most licenses only allow photocopies to be made for the congregation (the "people in the pews").  They do not allow copies to be made for choirs or musicians.  CCLI is the exception:  CCLI's license allows copies to be made for choirs and musicians along (provided the song is not a choir anthem or "special music")..

We do not have yearly licenses for any  songs from GIA Publishing, Oregon Catholic Press, or other companies, each of which cost $300 - $400.   However, it is not necessary at this time to purchase copyrights from other companies since we already have  many good OCP songs in our two hymnals:  the Missalette and Journey Songs..  If a song needs to printed in a bulletin for a special  liturgy, such as Easter or First Communion, we obtain rights for that single song only  (even if this song is already in our hymnals).  Costs for a single song are usually $20.00 per song per event.

Also, it is understood that 10 % of a piece of music can be freely copied for research purposes only.

If a person wishes to make a recording of live music during a church service at St. John, they can only keep it for themself.  They cannot give it away or to sell it unless they acquire specific permission from the composer and publisher.  Generally, royalties must be paid if the recordings are sold.

Finally, it should be said that we wish to support our fellow musicians and composers whenever possible, even  after  they have given us permission to copy their music to support congregational singing..
